Editing Services

I offer a variety of editing services to social scientists and researchers in the humanities seeking academic publication. Many of my clients are referred to me by colleagues, journal editors, or book publishers. In addition to journal articles and books, I have also edited museum exhibition texts, on-line curricula, and executive summaries and reports to governmental and non-governmental organizations. I also edit book and funding proposals, submission cover letters, CVs and tenure packages, scholarly blogs and magazine articles — whatever you need to move your career forward.

I bring a wide-ranging intellect and decades of experience to working on every manuscript from first draft through review to final publication. I am particularly skilled at holding the shape of the entire text in mind as I prune minutiae. While the scope of my work varies considerably, many projects require some combination of the following services.

Development edit: involves reading an early draft and providing detailed feedback without directly altering the text; I comment on the contents, suggest a revised outline or sharper focus, and identify any recurring writing issues to assist your revisions

Structural editing: adjusting manuscript structure to fit the logic of the central argument; moving sentences, paragraphs, or sections around to improve coherence; suggesting passages that still need to be written

Content editing: making sure theoretical concepts and evidence cohere with results and conclusions; adding transitional sentences; smoothing flow of overall text

Line-editing: fixing sentences and words for clarity and tone; weeding out repetition and unnecessary words to meet publisher’s length requirements

Copy-editing: cleaning up minor errors in punctuation or syntax; checking table data; checking citations against references; formatting text per publisher’s style guide
